Welcome to Edgecombe Early College High School!

Our mission at EECHS is clear:
The EECHS family will create powerful educational experiences that foster academic excellence, personal growth, and global citizenship while cultivating a lifelong passion for learning.

The education of any child is a cooperative effort between parents, teachers, administrators, and community resources. The ultimate responsibility for learning, however, falls to the individual student to ensure that his or her educational experience is as fulfilling as possible. Every student can learn, and I will provide a range of activities and experiences to bring students to the fountain of knowledge. Taking a drink? Well, that is the responsibility of the student him/herself.

The question is often asked, "Why do we have to take 4 English classes?" The answer is very involved: English is a class of exploration - of the self, of the world in which we live, and of the human experience. English classes allow students to engage in that exploration in ways that are different from their math, science, and history courses. Further, English skills are a necessary part of the everyday working world. Few are the careers that do not require aspects of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. A goal of the English classroom is to hone each of those skills to the highest proficiency.

All of the EECHS English courses are Honors level courses. As such, the degree of rigor involved in the coursework will require the full attention and effort of every student. Simply defined, "rigor" implies that the level of thought required to respond to inquiry is much higher than in traditional English classes. We will be exploring the implications and application of what we read as opposed to 'what happened in the story.'

Again, welcome to Edgecombe Early College High School. I look forward to working with each of you throughout the course of the academic year.
