For the first time in over a decade, Edgecombe Early College High School will be represented at the prestigious North Carolina Governor’s School, with two students earning acceptance into the highly selective program.
Kamryn Shaw and Avril Fuentes-Uscanga have been chosen to attend the four-week summer program, which brings together some of the most talented students from across the state. Shaw will attend Governor’s School at UNC-Greensboro, while Fuentes-Uscanga will study at Meredith College.
North Carolina Governor’s School, established in 1963, is the nation’s oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students. Participants engage in intensive study in their chosen discipline, exploring advanced concepts and creative problem-solving without the pressure of grades or tests.
Earning a place in Governor’s School is a significant achievement, as students must undergo a rigorous application and selection process. The program provides an unparalleled opportunity for intellectual and personal growth, allowing students to collaborate with peers and faculty in an environment that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and leadership.

About NC Governor’s School
Governor’s School is a summer residential program for rising high school seniors, funded by the state of North Carolina. Students explore topics in areas such as mathematics, science, English, social sciences, and the arts. The program is hosted at two campuses: UNC-Greensboro and Meredith College.
